$10.00, plus $2.50 shipping

Pictured on this DVD, the one room Red School House, also called Uptown School on Mill Street, was built in 1904 by the Mays Landing Water Power Company for children of its factory worker's. At the time of construction it cost $1000.00. The land was donated by George Wood, president of the water power company. Originally, grades one through eight were taught. The two doors were used to separate boys and girls. In 1920 there were 23 students of varying grades. It was the last functioning one-room school house in New Jersey. In 1964 only third graders were taught in the Uptown school. Later the building was used for Kindergarten from 1978 to 1984. It was opened occasionally to provide additional room for the Township of Hamilton growing school population. The Historical Society leased the school house from the district in 1996 and since then it has served as the Township's museum and library of local history.
